Day 1: Exploring Area

PRE-ASSESSMENT TOOL

Today we will begin to explore area. The area of a figure is measured in square units. Area can be measured using several measurement tools like perimeter: square inches, square centimeters, even square feet.

1) What type of figure would you use square feet to measure the area? Square inches? Square centimeters?

Area is measured in whole square units and half square units.

Work with a partner to find the area of the bottom of your shoe. Use page 370 of our Math book for directions.

Materials you will need:
*Grid paper
*Pencil
